Abstract :
Introduction: Universities, as fundamental institutions in knowledge production and social development, play an unparalleled role in societies. University performance across various dimensions including educational, research, social, and managerial aspects represents key components that influence these institutions' success. The present study aims to evaluate the performance of Islamic Azad University, Tehran Medical Sciences Branch, across these four dimensions and identify factors affecting its improvement.
Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among managers, staff, students, and faculty members of Islamic Azad University, Tehran Medical Sciences Branch. Convenience continuous sampling was employed, encompassing 322 participants including students, professors, managers, and staff. Research data were collected using researcher-developed questionnaires. The data collection instruments comprised four distinct questionnaires measuring research, education, general and social criteria, and management-related metrics.
Results: Analysis results indicate significant variations in performance evaluation criteria across different groups (staff, managers, students, and faculty) regarding means and significance levels. Criteria related to staff, managers, and faculty members demonstrate satisfactory levels, while student-related criteria show relatively lower levels. The Friedman test confirms significant differences in performance evaluation criteria rankings within each group. Generally, research-related criteria rank higher among students and staff, while general and social criteria rank highest among managers and faculty members. These findings highlight the importance of addressing various groups and key criteria for improving organizational performance.
Conclusion: This study revealed that while Islamic Azad University, Tehran Medical Sciences Branch, maintains acceptable performance in many areas, corrective measures are needed to achieve higher standards. Based on the findings, strengthening research infrastructure, increasing international interactions, improving management processes, and addressing educational and social needs of students and staff are among strategies that could enhance university performance. This research was limited to a cross-sectional performance assessment, and it is recommended that future studies employ longitudinal methods and qualitative analyses for deeper understanding. Additionally, conducting similar studies across other university branches could contribute to result generalization and development of performance improvement models.
