Abstract :

 

The ideas of postmodernism can be divided into two general categories. The first category includes theorists such as Barry Lewis, Peter Whalen, and David Lodge, who introduce a set of stylistic features of postmodernism, including uncertainty, paranoia, and temporal disorganization. The second category is a prominent theory by Brian McHale, which was inspired by the concept of the dominant element in Russian formalism to explain postmodernism. McHale argues that postmodernism focuses on ontology, as opposed to epistemology, which is the dominant element of modernism. Ontology examines the nature of existence. McHale argues that understanding the world is a prerequisite for answering ontological questions, but modern works refuse to provide definitive answers and leave the reader in existential uncertainty. Now, this research is looking for an answer to the question, what are the methods and components of ontology in the novel If One Night of the Winter Nights of a Traveler by Italo Calvino according to Brian McHale's theory and how these methods and components according to Brian McHale's theory highlight the ontological element of this novel. Do they play a role?

This research examines the novel If One Night of the Winter Nights of a Traveler by Italo Calvino and tries to identify the strategies and ontological elements in this novel based on McHale's theory. The results show that this novel is known for its complexity and difficulty by using techniques such as polyphony, uncertainty, temporal and spatial irregularity, and paranoia, and it portrays ontological elements well.
