The effect of twelve weeks of resistance training and creatine phosphate supplementation on serum dopamine and serotonin levels in middle-aged men during brain games

Abstract :
Introduction: The present study aimed to determine the effect of 12 weeks of resistance training with and without creatine phosphate supplementation on physical performance in middle-aged men.
Methods: 36 middle-aged men voluntarily participated in this study and were randomly assigned to three resistance training + supplementation groups (n=12), resistance training + placebo group (n=12), and control group (n=12). Resistance training was completed for 12 weeks with a frequency of four sessions per week at an intensity of 70 to 85% of one repetition maximum. The supplement group also consumed creatine hydrochloride at a rate of three grams per day on training and non-training days. The placebo group consumed maltodextrin under the same conditions. Repeated analysis of covariance test was used to compare differences between groups, and if significant, Bonferroni's post hoc test was used. The significance level was considered to be less than 0.05.
Results: There was no significant difference between the groups in the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the serum in the first (acute) phase (P=1.00). In the second phase; there was no significant difference in the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the control group compared to the resistance training + supplement group (P=1.00; P=0.269) and resistance training + placebo (P=1.00; P=0.341).
Conclusion: A period of resistance training and creatine hydrochloride supplementation had no significant effect on serotonin and dopamine levels.
