The role of psychological factors in the onset of Myocardial Infarction (MI) is still controversial.
Previous research has revealed a link between emotion , and cardiac risk factors in patients with MI , but the mechanisms underlying this relationship are less clear. To elucidate this relationship, we investigated the pathway from emotion to myocardial infarction (MI) via individual differences in personality.No studies have examined the role of emotional variables and personality traits as a contributing factor to MI in the Iran.
The objective of this study was to explore relationships between demographics, Behavioral inhibition system and behavioral approach system of personality types (BIS- BAS), emotion regulation , and cardiac risk factors.
The sample comprised 60 MI patients were recruited from Shahid Rajaie Cardiovascular and medical research center (RCMRC) in Tehran. Patients were assessed on demographic and clinical variables and completed the Gray’s BIS-BAS scale and Garnefski’s emotion regulation strategies Inventory within the first week of hospital admission for acute MI.
The results showed a significant relationship between emotion regulation and BIS-BAS personality types in the MI group. In addition, these individuals were also much more likely to have hypertension, cholesterol , body mass index (BMI) , and a history smoking. Moreover a significant relationship between the presence of Type BAS personality and the presence of MI was identified.
