The effects of urban green space in reducing flood risk: a case study of Khorramabad city

Abstract :
Urban development using current methods has had many negative impacts on water resources and urban ecology, creating urban environments that are not sustainable. In the field of hydrology, studies show that traditional urban rainwater management has had negative impacts, including increased runoff volume and increased peak discharges. Traditional urban water management methods have also greatly reduced the per capita area of urban green space by removing native vegetation and increasing hard surfaces.
Considering climate change and the damage and losses caused by floods in recent years, as well as the reduction of vegetation cover around urban rivers, as well as the increase in life and financial risks for citizens, in this study, flood risk and zoning of flood-prone lands in Khorramabad city were carried out using satellite images and Arc GIS software. The AHP model and the Expert Choice software environment were used to prioritize the criteria. Ultimately, it was concluded that the most important factor in the occurrence of floods is the lack of vegetation cover in the region, the distance from the riverbed, and construction along the riverbed, which has caused irreparable damage to the region and the city.
