Comparative evaluation of vitamin D level in healthy dogs and affected to hair loss in Ahvaz city

Abstract :
The important role of vitamin D in the health of dogs has been proven from various aspects; so that the deficiency of vitamin D can cause impaired growth of hair follicles. The purpose of the present research was to compare the level of vitamin D in healthy and hair loss dogs in Ahvaz . Blood samples were taken from the total of 120 dogs, consisting of sixty healthy dogs and sixty the affected dogs to hair loss. They were in the age range of 4 months to 10 yearsand both gender. A statistical analysis was performed to determine the effect of factors such as age, gender, breed, place of maintenance, season and type of nutrition on vitamin D levels. It was shown a significant difference between vitamin D concentration and hair loss level in dogs (p<0.05), so that the vitamin D concentration average was 25.45 ng/ml in healthy dogs and in dogs with hair loss 4.69 ng/ml. The effect of nutrition on vitamin D levels, was significant, so that the concentration average of this vitamin in the three groups that were fed with commercial, homemade and mixed were 31.10, 4.91 and 17.46 ng/ml (p<0.05). Vitamin D concentration was not significant in terms of age, gender, breed, season and the level of sunlight exposure (p>0.05). The present study confirmed that the concentration of vitamin D is different between healthy and hair loss dogs; as well as, the type of nutrition has a significant effect on the concentration of vitamin D.
