Religious and Ritual Spaces in the Architectural System of Zoroastrian Houses: A Case Study of Zoroastrian Houses in Yazd

Abstract :

The distinguishing factor in the architecture of ideological communities' houses from other residential architectures worldwide is the respect for human beings and space in defining a specific concept of home to express the notion of dwelling. These concepts derive from the worldview of the inhabitants. The Zoroastrian community, due to its historical background and unique architecture, represents a turning point in traditional Iranian architecture, possessing specific characteristics that differentiate its residential heritage architecture from other Iranian architectural patterns. Thus, this study aims to investigate the Zoroastrian doctrinal foundations to identify and introduce the position of worship and religious space in Zoroastrian houses in Yazd. For this purpose, the principles related to Zoroastrian worship and belief systems were first extracted, and objective concepts corresponding to architecture were established as the theoretical framework of the research. The research method is descriptive-analytical, utilizing documents, field studies, and interviews, with data analysis through interpretation and logical reasoning. Considering the Zoroastrian lifestyle and the importance of religious beliefs, the spatial system of the house has a different structure to meet the behavioral and functional needs of its inhabitants. The research results indicate that in the spatial system of Yazd Zoroastrian houses, there exists a space called "Paskam Mas," exclusively designated for prayer, worship, and religious activities within the home. This room, connected to the courtyard (4) Paskam of the house, is always located on the western side of the house facing east, as the Zoroastrian qibla is light and brightness. Therefore, this space always faces the sunrise, so that the first rays of the sun serve as a reminder that it is time for worship.Characteristics of this space include the requirement for ritual purity before entry, higher ceilings in some houses, impermeable flooring, eastern orientation, and connection to the religiously pure room. In general, a Zoroastrian house, in addition to being a place for living, is also considered a space for worship
