Abstract :

The ability of internal changes and adaptability of artificial environments can respond to more users' needs over time and thus have a better function than single-functional and unchangeable spaces. Achieving the ability to change and adapt in spaces is examined through the space flexibility topic. Traditional markets in Iran are one of the urban space types that have continued their life successfully, despite various environmental and social changes throughout history. Therefore, the question arises, what factors/parameters have caused the continuation of life of traditional markets during long periods? This article intends to examine the historical markets of Iran’s central regions and their characteristics, due to test the quality of their flexibility. The research method is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical based on content analysis. In this article, an attempt has been made to examine the quality of flexibility and its components from the aspect of form and function in the historical markets of Iran. A case study is the historical markets in the cities of Isfahan, Kashan, and Shiraz. The results show that in these markets, due to the incorporation of some physical and functional solutions, flexibility in the design, including the diversity of access for greater permeability to the space, the benefit of repeating patterns in the body, functional diversity, height limitation, the possibility of developing the form in Different directions, soft connection between spaces and the presence of multi-purpose spaces, we witness the continuity of human presence in this public place from the past until now, according to the audience needs to changes periodically.
