Content Analysis of the Attention to the Elements of Citizenship Education in Social Education Books of Elementary Periods

Abstract :
The overall aim of this research is to investigate and determine the distribution of the components of citizenship education in social science books in the elementary period of the academic year of 96-97. Content analysis method is used to achieve this goal. Also, for analyzing information, descriptive statistics such as abundance and percentages have been used, and for the purpose of providing data, graphs and tables have been used. The results of the research showed that in the social education books of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades of primary school, 78 items were referred to the components of citizenship education. Interpretation: By reflecting on these findings, it can be said that many components in all aspects of citizenship education have been underestimated with regard to curriculum design. Therefore, given the apparent distance and the lack of coordination of the proposed curriculum with the existing curriculum, the need to review and rethink all aspects of citizenship education in the curriculum is suggested. Among the dimensions of citizenship education, cultural education is one of the dimensions that has been given the least attention in social textbooks of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth forms of primary education. So, most of all, curriculum designers in the content of textbooks should place the cultural dimension of citizenship education on their policy axis.
