Abstract :
Sport injuries are one of the main causes of termination of an athletic career that can play a key role in the problems of retirement course. The intent of this descriptive study was to compare retirement problems between athletes who have terminated their sports due to injury and reasons other than injury. The statistical population included all retired athletes in Tehran province. By snowball sampling, 96 retired athletes were selected and employed in this study. 37 of these athletes terminated their sport due injuries (Group 1) and 59 due to other reasons (Group 2). Data were gathered through Sport Career Termination questionnaire (Erpic, 1998). Validity of instrument was confirmed by 13 university expert and reliability was computed by Cronbach Alpha (α=0.86). The data were analyzed by using Friedman, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilcoxon test (SPSS21). The results showed that there was a significant differences between the retirement age and sport career length between groups. Also, there were significant differences among retirement problems’ priority from the perspective of two groups. In addition, there were significant differences between received and expected support from the perspective of all participants. Therefore, it seems necessary to prevent the occurrence of injuries, to ensure complete treatment of injuries during sports career, and to provide various therapeutic, supportive and occupational interventions during retirement course. Sports officials must provide programs such as public health and nutrition consultant, educational and professional training, and rehabilitation program for athletes and prepare them to face with retirement and its likely problems.
