Abstract :

   Introduction: Luteal and physical changes happening in the menstrual cycle is called pre menstrual syndrome (PMS), and is seen in 50% of fertile women often causing problems in daily life. Insufficiency of chemical treatments like Fluoxetine, and their side effects on the other hand has brought up the idea of herbal treatments in PMS. Considering the agonist effect of Vitex agnus on dopamine receptors we have conducted this study to assess the therapeutic potencies of Vitex agnus on PMS in comparison with Fluoxetine.      Materials and methods: In this clinical trial 70 female patients referring to Azad Islamic university of Mashhad's clinics participated. These patients were diagnosed as PMS. Patients were divided in two groups randomly. One group treated with Vitex agnus and the other with Fluoxetine. Data were collected one month before and after treatment using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 15.      Results: The mean age of patients was 28/2±7/9 years. Demographic features like age, height, weight, number of pregnancies, diet, and physical activities had no significant difference in two groups. Data analysis showed significant decrease in head ache, sleep disorders and daily activity in both groups but the difference between the two was not significant. (p>0.05)      Discussion:Both Fluoxetine and Vitex agnus are efficient in treating PMS patients. Although no significant difference was seen between two, Vitex agnus could be the better choice considering less side effects. Similar to other studies the curative effects appear after one month of drug consumption. The most common side effect in patients with Vitex agnus was nausea which is supported by other reports.      Keywords: Premenstrual syndrome, Vitex agnus, Fluoxetine.
