Evaluation of the knowledge, attitude and performance of female personnels of Mashhad Azad university hospitas about breast cancer

Abstract :

    Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second reason of the death due to cancer in the women. The mortality rate in this cancer directly depends on the stage of the disease in diagnosis time and it will decrease, in the case of using the screening methods. This study has been done with the goal of evaluation of the knowledge, attitude and performance of the female personnel of Mashhad Azad University hospitals in the breast cancer.     Method: In this cross-sectional study, the female personnel of Aria, 22 Bahman  and 17 Shahrivar hospitals that desired to participate in the study were tested by a 3-page questionnaire. In order to determine the levels of awareness in studied society, answers to the 20 questions for level of knowledge were scored and scores were categorized in  four levels (good, medium, bad and unacceptable). Answers to 10 attitude questions was scored by Likert scale and categorized in 3group of posetive attitude, medium attitude or negative attitude. We evaluated participates breast self exam as performance assessment. At the end, the information were analysed by using software SPSSV20.    Statistic data results: In the total, 363 people entered the study that their average age was 37.1±6.2 years. 281 persons (77. 4%) of individuals participated in the study were married and the rest were single. Most of people(65.3%) had medium knowledge score. All of the percipitans had posetive or medium attitude and no negative attitude was reported.151 persons (41. 6%) never had done breast self exam and only 13.5% (49 person) stated that they do it monthly. In total, the participants had medium levels of knowledge and attitude about breast cancer but their performance was poor.    Result: With paying attention to this fact that personnel working in health services can improve society behaviors, the implementation of the regular educational and codified plans in relation with prevention of breast cancer specially breast self exam, clinical breast exam and mammography seems necessary for this group.
