Abstract :
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and nonsuicidal self-injury, taking into account the mediating role of positive and negative dimensions of self-compassion. The current study is developmental in its purpose and descriptive-correlational in its approach to data collection. The statistical population included adolescents aged 13 to 18 who were enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year. A convenience sample of 575 adolescents was selected, and the results were analyzed using structural equation modeling in the SPSS and AMOS software package. Theresults demonstrated a direct and statistically significant correlation between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents. Also, themodel based on the mediating effect of positive and negative dimensions of self-compassion between childhood abuse and nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents had a good fit with the data. Because of this, it can be concluded that the positive dimensions of self-compassion are at risk among children who do not receive enough love in their growing environment and will never learn to be kind to themselves in painful situations. Therefore, it is possible that hidden motives such as self-punishment play a role in the occurrence of self-injury behavior and the adolescent uses non-suicidal self-injury, which is an abnormal coping strategy.
