Indigence and Abundance from Hojviri and Khaje Abdollāh Ansari’s Points of View

Abstract :

  Indigence and abundance (faqr and ghanā) are two major keywords in Iranian Islamic mystical literature. They are two opposing concepts, referring to poverty as opposed to richness. For Hojviri and Khaje Abdollāh, abundance is Divine attribute, but it can be a human attribute meaning the richness of heart. In Islamic mysticism, richness of heart is a mystical state referring to needlessness from everything but God. On the other hand, indigence is needfulness to God, and via this needfulness the mystics reach the station of ecstasy (fanās fi Allah). This article expounds these subjects from Hojviri and Kaje Abdollāh Ansāri’s, the two famous Iranian mystics, points of view.
