Comparing the Conceptual Metaphors of the 'World' in Saadi’s and Parvin’s Poems

Abstract :

 According to the theory of conceptual metaphor, the conceptual system in the human mind has a metaphorical nature and metaphors are the main pillars in transmitting abstract concepts. In the present research, the main issue is to study how is the method of metaphorical conceptualization of the 'world' in Ghasides and Ghetaas of Saadi and Parvin? The main purpose of this study is to find out how conceptualization of the world represents the poets' dominant thinking towards the world. The research was conducted by descriptive-analytic method. The results of studying consist of 229 conceptual metaphors about the target of the world which were selected and evaluated from both poets’ Ghasides and Ghetaas. The findings show that the source domains including object, human, buildings, journey, animal, sea, farm, business, and war were mentioned in both poets’ poems. The source domain of land was just found in Saadi’s poems. Furthermore, source domains such as garden, mine, fiction, magic, mountain, devil, sport, well, tent, fire, food, plain, court, thunder, school, hive, plant, ambush location, and village were just fund in Parvin’s poems. Saadi has mostly used the object source domain but Parvin has mostly used human source domain to conceptualize 'world'. So, she has achieved a set of different metaphors which offer experiences about how to comprehend world and acts towards it in terms of human motivations, characteristics, and activities. It can be said that both poets have used source domain 'losing object' both in Ghasides and Ghetaas. It can be inferred that both poets do not consider the world and its belongings as a valuable thing to be interested in. To sum up, in spite of different metaphors in parvin’s poems, her thoughts and attitudes towards the concept of the world is convergent with Saadi’s as far as it can be said that she has been affected by Saadi’s attitudes towards the world.
