.The Role of Digitalization of Media Consumption in the LifeStyle of the Citizens of Tehran

Abstract :

Digital media play an important role in how we perceive the world around and it brings new lifestyles and thinking for its audience by showing the relationships that are dominant and prevalent in society and it also affects the lifestyle of the audience. This article attempts to study the role of digital media consumption in lifestyle of Tehrani citizens. The theoretical framework of this research was based on Giddens’ structuration theory and Katz’ Gratification Theory. The research method is survey and research tool is questionnaire. The research population of this study consisted of Tehrani citizens in 2018. Sample size was determined to be 420 people using the Cochran formula and it was selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. Descriptive findings showed that more than half of the respondents made use of virtual social networks for about two hours a day and that Instrgram and Telegram were used the most. Inferrential results showed that there was a significant relationship between lifestyle and digitalization of media consumption (r = 0.58), use of the virtual social network (r = 0.50), membership duration (r = 0.41) and membership rates in cyberspace (r = 0.26). Regression analysis showed that usage of virtual social networks determined 50 percent, that of membership duration in virtual social networks, 22 percent, and extent of dependence on virtual social networks, 50 percent of the variations in lifestyle. The maximum amount of impact was that of the extent of usage of virtual social networks.
