The study assessed the profitability of catfish marketing in Ondo State, Nigeria. Structured interviews were used to collect information from a total of 50 marketers in each selected town across four local governments using a multi-stage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics, Gini coefficient, and regression analysis were used for data analysis. The profitability analysis showed that catfish marketing is profitable with an income of N2,998 ($8.3) for every marketing operation. The Gini Coefficient value of 0.74 showed a high level of inequality in income distribution among the catfish marketers and also a high concentration of catfish marketers in the study area. The regression analysis showed that the total kilogram of catfish sold, the price per kilogram of catfish, experience in years, transportation cost of catfish, and age in years are determinants of income of catfish marketers and accounted for 91.2% variation in income of the catfish marketers. The problems militating against catfish marketing in the study area include; high rate of spoilage and high cost of transportation in the study area. The study recommended among others that the government should try as much as possible to organize seminars, workshops, and necessary trainings for catfish marketers on how they can reduce their losses so as to have a required and sustainable income. تفاصيل المقالة

AbstractThis study examined the value chain of catfish products in Ibadan metropolis. The data used was from a primary origin. The instrument of data collection was structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling method using snowball technique was employed to select 50 catfish farmers and 50 catfish marketers in the study area. While random sampling technique was engaged for selection of 100 catfish consumers.more over, descriptive statistics, profitability and value chain analysis techniques were used to analyse the data collected. The findings revealed that majority of the actors in the catfish value chain were relatively young adults with moderate household size and having higher level of education. The catfish farmers should be induced with productive resources to harness their potentials. Also, catfish experts should collaborate and work on local feed materials to reduce the cost of catfish feeds and catfish marketing cooperative or self-help groups should be developed to stimulate consumption تفاصيل المقالة

Six different composite packaging materials were tested with the trades’ practice of polythene bags in storing smoked catfish for a period of six months. The thickness of the packaging materials ranges from 0.23 to 046 mm with water and oil absorption rates of the packaging materials varies from 0.23 to 10.00 and 0.28 to 10.857 glcm2/mm respectively. The impact resistance weight also varies from 25 to 50 gm. It was observed that the physical properties of the packaging materials are related to the keeping quality of the stored catfish. The two packaging with better engineering properties offered better barrier functionality that gave better keeping quality for the catfish. [O, Foline Folorunsho et al. Effect of the Physical Properties of Composite Packaging Materials on Keeping Quality of Smoked Catfish. The poor performance of fishery subsector is most clearly evidenced by low adoption of fishery production technologies by farmers. The purpose of this research was analyzing influence of socio-economic factors on the adoption of fish production technologies by community-based farmers in Cross River State, Nigeria. A Multistage random sampling technique was used in selecting 60 community-based farmers. Data for the study were analyzed with descriptive statistics and probit regression model. The result showed that the farmers adopted catfish technology packages such as; pond construction, stocking rate, fertilization of pond, feeding, test cropping, fingerlings production and harvesting and processing. The probit regression estimates of the determinants of farmer’s adoption showed that coefficients of education, farm income and extension contacts were positive and significant at 1%. Policies aimed at encouraging farmers’ access to extension education and information on fish production technologies through extension were advocated for increased fish production and poverty alleviation. تفاصيل المقالة

In the present study a total of 180 S.glanis (60 fish for each area) were collected from Aras, Mahabad and Zarrineh (shahid kazemi) dam reservoirs in the one-year survey of 2018. The seasonal prevalence of infection to Siluris glanis in Aras, Mahabad and Zarrineh were as spring (60%, 56%, 59%), summer (70%, 66.5%, 69%), Autumn (63.3%, 66%, 64%) and winter (45%, 39%, 41%) respectively. Maximum infection intensity (Mean ± SE) of P.osculatus was determined in Aras (6.61 ± 0.5), Mahabad (5.82 ± 0.61) and Zarrineh (5.7 ± 0.56) dams in summer. The numbers of parasites were ranged from 1 to 17 in different seasons. The prevalence and intensity (Mean ± SE) of infection were significantly different in summer and winter with the other seasons (p<0.05). Data analysis had demonstrated that infection rate in affected fish mostly depended on seasons. Also, there was no significant difference in infection to this parasite between male and female European catfish. Also, pathological study demonstrated that scolex adhesiveness to the intestine of Siluris glanis caused mechanical damages on it. According to the results, infection of freshwater catfish to Protocephalus osculatus enjoyed the highest prevalence in the study area.
