The present study aimed at investigating whether two types of assessment strategies, namely Dynamic Assessment and Non-Dynamic Assessment had any significant impact on elementary and pre-intermediate Iranian EFL learners' performance on their final achievement test including reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. The participants of the study were 81 learners studying at the elementary and pre-intermediate levels in four classes in a language school in Tehran, Iran. Having tested them through the KET and PET respectively, one class at each level was randomly assignedas the experimental group. During 13 sessions, eight quizzes were administered in all the four classes. Following the principles of DA, participants of the two experimental groups received assistance when taking the quizzes while, in the two control groups, no assistance was provided. After the treatment, ANOVA was run on the results of the post-tests at the two levels, the results of which indicated that DA was only effective on the pre-intermediate learners and not on the elementary ones. The findings of this article will help English teachers with more effective teaching as they can set up an atmosphere where leraners can actively participate in the process of assessment while at the same time learners can experience a different and dynamic learning environment which is enjoyable, constructive, creative and free from test anxiety. تفاصيل المقالة

It is assumed that web-based dynamic assessment will continue to thrive and have a profound role in pedagogy. In this regard, an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was selected to consider the effect of web-based dynamic assessment on learners' autonomy. A sample of 60 high school EFL learners was selected non-random for this purpose, and they were categorized into two groups web-based dynamic assessment and the control group based on the convenience sampling method. the learners’ autonomy questionnaire was used as a data-gathering tool for the pretest and posttest in autonomy. The high school students were exposed to web-based DA via a designed web, based on the student's level and need in grammar. However, control learners learned grammar through the traditional or conventional method of instruction. Based on Mann-Whitney U-test results, the learners’ autonomy means scores in web-based DA increased in comparison to those of the control group. The platform and methods employed in this study produce results that are encouraging for the field of language instruction and could produce motivational outcomes in the future. The pedagogical implications of the study will be discussed. تفاصيل المقالة

This article presents the outcomes of how Dynamic Assessment (DA) may be organized to function within a class’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The testing field also has recently undergone noticeable changes leading to a shift to use technology that is emerged in our era. The study investigated college students’ barriers and motivations for testing reading comprehension ability using the newly designed software. To this end, 30 participants were interviewed and the related data were analyzed thematically to identify emerging themes relating to the current status of the new testing environment. Four themes emerged relating to potential barriers and motivations and the results showed that working with the software provided positive experiences of working in a supportive environment. The study found that using the newly designed software in the classroom generally enhances learning and other outcomes. This novel software does not only aim to reduce barriers in conventional testing environment but also highlights the positive aspects which enhance motivation. تفاصيل المقالة

4 - Effect of Storytelling Instruction on Developing Iranian EFL Learners’ Oral Proficiency within ZPD-activated Proximal Context

The application of zone of proximal development (ZPD), as a major tenet of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (SCT, 1978), has recently been invited in the L2 learning/teaching profession. This study mainly examined whether Iranian EFL learners’ interactions in diverse ZPD-activated proximal contexts through the use of storytelling instruction could improve their oral (speaking) proficiency and attitudes towards speaking in ZPD-based learning context. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used with 60 intermediate EFL participants selected from Asre-no English Language Institute in Iran, after administering the OQPT. Then, the participants were assigned into 2 experimental groups (ZPD-activated equal and unequal groups), and 1 control group, with 20 participants in each group. The students in both experimental groups were exposed to the storytelling-based instruction within different ZPD-activated proximal contexts (equal and unequal), but in the control group the traditional teacher-fronted instruction within a non-ZPD context was conducted. A semistructured interview and a questionnaire were used to assess the participants’ speaking proficiency and attitudes before and after the instruction. The findings from the analysis of covariance and t test suggested that using storytelling instruction within ZPD-activated contexts significantly improved both the participants’ speaking proficiency and their attitudes. Further data analysis of the ZPD participants’ performance indicated that no significant difference between the learners’ speaking proficiency development of equal and unequal peer groups was found. By implication, ZPD-based pair work and storytelling-based instruction, interwoven with each other in a balanced manner, would be highly fruitful in developing EFL learners’ speaking skill and their attitudes. تفاصيل المقالة

Acquiring writing skills is more difficult compared to other three skills because writing skills require mastery of many different linguistic elements of the language that are beyond what is just taught in the standard curriculum. Therefore, EFL teachers should adopt effective strategies and techniques to develop the students' proficiency to write well. This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of genre-based instruction as a teaching strategy on the Iranian middle school students' proficiency in argumentative writing. To do so, a mixed method design was adopted in which 40 EFL students were selected based on a multi stage sampling procedure form high schools in Varamin, Iran. A researcher-made writing test and a perception questionnaire were used to collect the quantitative data. Cronbach's alpha was used to check the internal consistency of the questionnaire. The participants were grouped into genre-based instruction class (GBIC) and control class (CC). Before they began the writing lessons, the students were given a pretest so their initial writing ability would be similar. After undergoing the 12-session treatment, they were given a writing assessment to gauge if the treatment had been effective. Additionally, the perception questionnaire was administered to collect data on students' attitudes towards the genre-based instruction (GBI). This study also collected qualitative data through an interview and in-classroom observation. The experimental findings of this current study revealed that GBI had a significant effect on the development of argumentative writing ability among EFL students. تفاصيل المقالة
