1 - Representation of Family in Hollywood Movies Displayed on Satellite

In the 21st century, media such as satellite and cinema have linked communities closer together. In such a situation, the views, attitudes and beliefs of other societies reach out to other societies in the form of images, sounds and symbols through new media. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and analyze Hollywood films displayed on satellite networks with an emphasis on the concept of family and family relationships. The research methodology is content analysis and the Hollywood productions from 2000 to 2010 displayed on the satellite networks were reviewed. The results showed that the highest frequency of families depicted in the single-parent families (mother and son) was % 21.4 and the divorced families were % 26.7. The intergenerational relationship in the investigative films is negative and is over 70% depicted. In most films where the issue of marriage has been shown in some way, the importance of marriage has been emphasized on the criteria for choosing a materially spouse based on two aspects of apparent beauty and wealth and worldly possessions. تفاصيل المقالة -

2 - The Effects of Watching Foreign Movies on Iranian Hotel Management Students’ Speaking Skill

Two intact classes, taught by the same instructor, were considered as the two groups of the study. The experimental group (N = 30) watched the FL videos during eight sessions while the control group (N = 30) did not have an opportunity to watch the videos and had their normal classes. The Oxford Placement Test (OPT) and IELTS Speaking Test were administered as the instruments in the current study. Results indicated that the participants’ speaking skill improved significantly after watching the FL videos. Moreover, the findings demonstrated that watching FL videos significantly promoted the learners’ pronunciation. In practical terms, the findings suggest that tourism course developers can include more foreign movies in their courses’ syllabus and language instructors to hotel staffs can take advantage of students' interest in watching videos and use it as an effective tool in their classroom to enhance the hotel staff and hotel management learners’ speaking skill and pronunciation. تفاصيل المقالة -

3 - Effects of Closed-caption Programs on EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension and Vocabulary Learning

Sixty-four graduate students studying at Shiraz Islamic Azad University were selected as the participants of the study. The participants were divided into two groups: experimental group (with closed caption program) and control group (without closed caption program). A BBC documentary movie (EARTH PLANET), was selected based on the content and level of difficulty of the language (matched to level of proficiency of the participants (advanced level)). Both classes watched the movie, but class one with closed-caption and the other one without closed-caption. Two researcher-designed tests (one listening comprehension test and one vocabulary test) were employed as the instruments. To ensure the reliability of the tests, the researcher conducted a pilot study. The results of the Guttmann reliability indicated that the tests were highly reliable. The participants answered the relevant multiple-choice vocabulary and listening comprehension questions. The results of independent sample t-test analysis clearly indicated that closed-caption program had a positive impact on participants’ listening comprehension. It can be said that the participants of the experimental group comprehended the movie better than the participants of the experimental group. However, closed-caption program did not have an effect on participants' vocabulary learning or vocabulary recognition and there wasn’t any difference between the performance of male and female participants of the experimental group in listening comprehension and vocabulary learning tests. تفاصيل المقالة -

4 - بازنمایی زنان در فیلمهای آپارتاید: مطالعه ی موردی دو فیلم وینی ماندلا و سارافین
محمدباقر قهرمانی محمدجواد بختیاریهدف از این پژوهش، بررسی بازنمایی نقش زنان در فیلم های مربوط به آپارتاید آفریقای جنوبی می باشد. این مقاله، از میان فیلم های ساخته شده درباره ی آپارتاید به عنوان جامعه هدف، بازنمایی زنان در دو فیلم وینی ماندلا و سارافینا را که بر اساس روش نمونه گیری هدفمند، انتخاب شده ان أکثرهدف از این پژوهش، بررسی بازنمایی نقش زنان در فیلم های مربوط به آپارتاید آفریقای جنوبی می باشد. این مقاله، از میان فیلم های ساخته شده درباره ی آپارتاید به عنوان جامعه هدف، بازنمایی زنان در دو فیلم وینی ماندلا و سارافینا را که بر اساس روش نمونه گیری هدفمند، انتخاب شده اند، مورد مطالعه قرار می دهد. مقاله حاضر به شیوه ی تحلیلی – توصیفی، به چگونگی بازنمایی زنان در دو فیلم مذکور پرداخته و جایگاه زنان در این فیلم ها را بررسی می نماید. در این پژوهش، از روش مطالعه و تحلیل فیلم برای بررسی و تفسیر داده ها استفاده شده است. در نتایج پژوهش نیز مشخص شد که بازنمایی زنان در این فیلم ها، شخصیت هایی پویا، مهربان، باهوش، سخت کوش و دارای روحیات بزرگ است. آن ها اگرچه ممکن است مرز زنانگی را شکسته و وارد حیطه های مردان شوند و بخواهند نقوش مردانه بازی کرده و به هر نوعی وارد دنیای ناشناخته مردانه شوند، بااین حال بعد زنانه ی شاندرنهایت آنهارا عقب می کشد و آنهاهمچنان با آرامش و آینده نگری زنانهاوضاع را کنترل می کنند. تفاصيل المقالة -

5 - A Comparative Study of the Effectiveness of Persian vs. English Subtitled Movies on Listening Comprehension Ability among Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners

To do so, 60 EFL learners were selected through OPT from two classes at a private institute in Sari, Mazandaran province. The participants were classified into three groups: two experimental groups: a) English subtitle group (N=20); Persian subtitle group (N = 20) and a control group (N=20). The instruments of this study were listening pre- and posttests. The collected data were analyzed through a paired sample t-test and a One-way ANOVA. The result showed that both Persian and English subtitle films had a significant effect on intermediate EFL learners’ listening comprehension performance. Therefore the first and the second hypotheses were rejected. Moreover, there was statistically meaningful difference between the performances of experimental and control groups in listening comprehension after they received instruction. Therefore, the third hypothesis was rejected. This study had few implications for language teachers, practitioners and syllabus designers to use audiovisual programs in facilitating language learning process. تفاصيل المقالة -

6 - Impact of Using YouTube Videos on Iranian Intermediate Male and Female EFL Learners' Listening Skill Development

It was conducted with 60 male and female intermediate male and female EFL learners. The Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) was used to measure the participants’ language proficiency to make sure about homogeneity of the participants. The participants were assigned into two experimental groups and two control groups based on their gender. Then, the experimental groups received instructional YouTube clips, but the control group received the same material without YouTube clips. A pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was adopted for the purpose of doing this research study. The findings represented that the experimental groups had a significantly higher performance than the control groups and there was no significant difference between male and female learners. The findings of the study offer some practical implications for EFL teachers, learners, curriculum planners, and teaching methodology. تفاصيل المقالة -

7 - Implications of News Segments and Movies for Enhancing Listening Comprehension of Language Learners

To this end, أکثرAbstract Armed with technological development, the present study aimed at gauging the effectiveness of exposure to news and movies as two types of audiovisual programs in improving language learners’ listening comprehension at the intermediate level. To this end, a listening comprehension test was administered to 108 language learners and finally 60 language learners were selected as intermediate language learners and randomly divided into group one and group two. During the experiment, group one participants had exposure to audiovisual news stories to work on in and outside the classroom. On the contrary, the participants in group two had only exposure to a sample selected utterances extracted from different kinds of movies. At the end of the experiment, both groups took another sample listening test to find out to what extent the participants in each group could enhance their listening comprehension. The results obtained from the posttest were indicative of the fact that the participants who had exposure to news outperformed the participants who had exposure to movies. The findings of the present research seem to indicate that the language input embedded in the type of audiovisual programs which language learners are exposed to is more important than the amount of exposure. تفاصيل المقالة -

8 - The Effect of Watching Musical Movies on English Language Learners’ Listening Comprehension and Happiness

However, prior studies have not dedicated sufficient focus to the influence of educational approaches on the happiness of English language learners. Consequently, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of musical movies on the happiness and listening comprehension of English language learners. The current study was implemented within the context of English listening comprehension, involving a sample of participants aged 10 years (N=52). The study was carried out at a private primary school located in Kerman, Iran. To procure quantitative data and monitor any plausible changes in the listening comprehension of the students, pre- and post-listening tests were administered. Additionally, the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire developed by Hills and Argyle (2002) was used to assess the participants’ happiness levels in English language classrooms at both the beginning and end of the project. The results of the post-listening tests indicated that the experimental group exhibited superior performance compared to the control group participants. Furthermore, it was observed that the implementation of songs from animated movies resulted in heightened levels of happiness among the participants. Briefly, when the process of learning English becomes a pleasurable and satisfying experience, it has the potential to enhance the happiness and listening comprehension of the students. تفاصيل المقالة -

ایلمیرا ساسانپور افسانه ادریسی مجید توسلیدر این مقاله به موضوع بازنمایی جنبشهای اجتماعی زنان در فیلمهای سینمایی حق رأی، سرزمین شمالی، فرشتههای آرواره آهنین، داستان رزا پارکس از دهه (2016-1920) ، پرداخته میشود. جنبش زنان، جنبشی سازمان یافته برای دستیابی به حقوق زنان وایدئولوژی برای دگرگونی جامعه است که هدف أکثردر این مقاله به موضوع بازنمایی جنبشهای اجتماعی زنان در فیلمهای سینمایی حق رأی، سرزمین شمالی، فرشتههای آرواره آهنین، داستان رزا پارکس از دهه (2016-1920) ، پرداخته میشود. جنبش زنان، جنبشی سازمان یافته برای دستیابی به حقوق زنان وایدئولوژی برای دگرگونی جامعه است که هدف آن رویای دفع انواع تبعیض وستم نژادی می باشد.در این مقاله نویسنده با بررسی چهار فیلم سینمایی با روش کیفی و با بهرهگیری از رویکرد نشانهشناسی چارلز سندرس پیرس و با نظریه کنش جمعی چارلز تیلی و نظریههای بنیادی فمینیسم میخواهد به این تحلیل برسد که فیلمهای سینمایی تا چه حد در بازنمایی جنبشهای اجتماعی زنان موثر خواهد بود. به نظر میرسد که فیلمهای سینمایی نقش پررنگی در بیان و بازنمایی جنبشهای اجتماعی زنان در جامعه دارند. یافتههای تحقیق حاکی از آن بودند که معناهایی که در فیلمها بازنمایی شدهاند شامل: نفی وضع موجود وهویت ما محور، داشتن برنامه و رفتار جمعی سازمان یافته، مشخص بودن اهداف، داشتن ایدئولوژی، تعهدو الزام، مخالفت با رفتارهای خشونتآمیز، جنبش رادیکال، ارزشمندی، تعهّد، وحدت بوده است. تفاصيل المقالة
