Contrastive rhetorical analysis as a way of understanding different ways through which writers from various cultural backgrounds shape their discourse was officially initiated by the works of Kaplan (1966). Writing essays and articles has long been considered as a crucial mode of written discourse which is a difficult type of text for students, especially for English as foreign language (EFL) learners. Writing essays also makes up a significant part of the International English Language Test System (IELTS), as one of the most reputable English tests that is used to assess the language proficiency of those intending to study or work in an English speaking context. This study offers a contrastive genre analysis of the essays written by male and female, and native and non-native writers in IELTS task 2 essay tests. The foremost purpose of the study is to discover whether native and non-native writers utilized the same rhetorical techniques in composing IELTS essays. The study Grounded on Swales’ (1990) CARS genre move framework, this research proposed a modified model of Swales’ (1990) CARS genre move framework for the argumentative essays to adjust for the observed differences. The article has significant theoretical and pedagogical implications for teachers, learners, material developers, and syllabus designers. تفاصيل المقالة

This study aims at explaining informal Internet-based chat format with respect to its genre and writing components and system. The researchers analyzed 53 chat samples which were produced by 53 Iranian students in high intermediate and advanced levels of English in a private institute while chatting with foreigners. Besides the genre analysis, the purposes why people all around the world chat on the Internet were investigated based on these samples i . Five moves and seven purposes were found. Our data suggest that although purposes of samples are different, they follow the same moves. The results show that informal Internet based chat concerns with different purposes as chatting for improving English language, familiarity with different peoples and countries, friendship, finding a sexual partner or talking about religious or political ideas تفاصيل المقالة

This paper explores sub-disciplinary variations and generic structure of research article introductions (RAIs) within three sub-disciplines of applied linguistics (AL); namely, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Psycholinguistics, and Sociolinguistics, using Swales’(1990) CARS model. The corpus consisted of 90 RAIs drawn from a wide range of refereed journals in the corresponding sub-disciplines. The results indicate sub-disciplinary variation in the structure of this genre in terms of Move 2 / step 1B that can be justified through the concepts of ‘established’ versus ‘emerging’ fields. The findings underline the need for further in-depth research into sub-disciplinary variation and generic structure of RAIs. The results also promise pedagogical implications for ESP/EAP practitioners, course administrators as well as material developers. تفاصيل المقالة

Following Swales’ (1981) definition of genre analysis many scholars have attempted to characterize good academic writing; however, this can be difficult and worrying for non-native writers. Since a well-written abstract encourages readers more effectively, the present study intended to find differences in the rhetorical structures of abstracts by TEFL students from the University of Tehran (UT) and Islamic Azad University of Gorgan (IAUG). To meet this end, 100 abstracts (50 abstracts by TEFL students from UT and 50 abstracts by TEFL students from IAUG) were randomly selected. Swales’ (1981) IMRD (Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion) and Swales’ (1990) CARS (Created A Research Space) models were employed to recognize the rhetorical structure of the abstracts. Then, the frequencies and sequences of moves and steps were calculated using chi-square to find the differences. The results revealed that there were significant differences between the abstracts by TEFL students from UT and IAUG. The findings indicated that TEFL students from IAUG followed the IMRD and CARS more than TEFL students from UT. The findings of this study have some pedagogical implications for both non-native writers and postgraduate students as well as English academic writing teachers and students. تفاصيل المقالة

Following Swales’s (1981) works on genre analysis, studies on different sections of research articles in different languages and fields abound. This paper compares Applied Linguistics research article abstracts published in Oxford University and Islamic Azad University of Tabriz in English using Swales’s (1981-1990) move structure model and Halliday’s (1994) description of transitivity processes. One hundred and forty eight English research article abstracts were analyzed at macro and micro level based on the Swales’s model (IMRD) and transitivity system. The results demonstrated that the four structural moves of Swales and transitivity processes of Halliday were evident in both abstract sets but were differently distributed. The research suggests pedagogical implications for TEFL practitioners, especially for the writing skill and for the preparing research article abstracts (RAAs). تفاصيل المقالة

Abstract Genre-based approach has been the focus of interest in the teaching of language since the mid1980s. Genre is defined in terms of the use of language in conventionalized communicative settings. The present study made an attempt to scrutinize the effects of genre-based pedagogy on Iranian Pre-intermediate EFL leaners' reading comprehension as well as the interaction between their reading comprehension achievement and their general English proficiency. To examine the formulated hypothesis, a sample of 80 Pre-intermediate EFL learners attending a language institute was selected. Then, the participants were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The instructional procedures went on six sessions before the posttest was administered. The results of an independent samples t test revealed that genre-based pedagogy had a significant effect on Iranian Pre-intermediate EFL learners' reading comprehension. Implications of the study can include, among other things, the incorporation of genre-based pedagogy in the EFL language teaching curriculum in Iran. تفاصيل المقالة

One important approach to macro structure study of a text is to analyze it in relation to its generic structure. The present study investigated variations in the use of textual meta-discourse markers (TMMs) in two major sections of research articles (RAs), that is introduction and method. It aimed to find out how TMMs are deployed and whether differences in the rhetorical structures of introduction and method account for any change in the distribution and use of TMMs. Sixty-five RAs from international journals published 2005 onward were selected. In order to identify TMMs, Hylands' (2004) model of metadiscourse markers (MMs) was used. Findings marked variations in the use of TMMs in introduction and method sections which, in turn, justify generic variations in the two sections. An awareness of the kinds of meanings that can be construed and the linguistic resources available to do so may be an important step in students’ learning to manage these resources in their own writing. تفاصيل المقالة

In order to achieve the objective of the study, 120 English thesis abstracts and their Persian translations of Iranian TEFL students at MA level at different universities of Iran were collected and analyzed. The sampling method used was purposive sampling. The qualitative content analysis was done by two raters based on Swales’ (2004) model. Then, the frequencies and percentages of different moves were calculated in the English and Persian corpora. Finally, Chi-square tests were run to check the significance of difference between the frequencies of different moves in the English and Persian corpora. The results showed the occurrence of various moves in the English corpus. The results also confirmed that different moves were present in the Persian corpus. Finally, the results demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the frequencies of different moves in the two corpora, except Move 1 Step 2 Making topic generalizations, Move 2 Step 1B Indicating a gap, Move 2 Step 1C Question raising, and Move 3 step 6 (PISF) Stating the value of the present research. تفاصيل المقالة

Despite the crucial role of introductory sections in argumentative academic writing, the effects of genre- based approaches to writing introductory paragraphs have not been much explored yet. The present study aimed to investigate whether the provision of genre knowledge through modeling and non-modeling could enhance learners’ ability in writing introductory paragraphs of argumentative essays. Adopting an intact group sampling within a quasi-experimental design, 75 graduate and post-graduate students with intermedi- ate level of language proficiency were selected from three universities and randomly divided into three groups: modeling, non-modeling, and a control group. Modeling and non-modeling groups received genre- based treatment while the control group had a non-genre based treatment as placebo. The statistical proce- dures of dependent-samples t-tests, a one-way ANOVA, and correlational analyses significantly confirmed the positive effects of both modeling and non-modeling genre-based instruction on the writing ability of the learners. No significant difference, however, was found between the two genre-based groups. تفاصيل المقالة
