جهت حفظ منابع فسیلی به عنوان مهم ترین منبع تامین انرژی، بشر نیازمند یافتن منابع تجدیدپذیری برای این مواد است. از جمله گزینههای پیش رو زیستتوده است که قابلیت تبدیل به زیستسوختها را دارد. از جمله مهمترین زیستسوختهای تولید شده اتانول است که به عنوان بهترین جایگزین برای بنزین شناخته شده است. تبدیل زیستتوده به زیستسوخت طی یکی از فرآیندهای زیستپالایی به نام تبدیل زیستی انجام میشود که در آن ابتدا محتوای کربوهیدراتی زیستتوده به قندهای ساده تبدیل شده، سپس قندها به اتانول تخمیر شوند. با توجه به ساختار سخت تجزیهشونده مواد لیگنوسلولزی، انجام روش پیشتیمار ضروری به نظر میرسد که روشهای متفاوتی از جمله تیمارهای فیزیکی و شیمیایی پیشنهاد شده است. در مرحله قندسازی، زیستتوده تیمار شده تحت اثر آنزیمهای تجزیهکننده قرار می گیرد که بسته به نوع آنزیمهای استفاده شده قندهای 5 یا 6 کربنه یا هردونوع تولید میشود و بر این اساس نوع میکروارگانیسم تخمیر کننده انتخاب میشود. برای بالا بردن بازده نهایی تجزیه و تخمیر، معمولا این دو مرحله را بهصورت هم زمان انجام میدهند. یکی از ابعاد مهم تحقیقات در زمینه تولید زیستسوختها به خصوص اتانول، معطوف به توسعه روشهای تخمیری است تا بازده نهایی تولید را افزایش دهند که از مهم ترین این تحقیقات میتوان به روش تخمیر دوفازی اشاره کرد.
