Numerical Simulation of the Performance of Groynes in the Outer Bends of Rivers Using MIKE 21 Software (case study Ghal’eh Raeesi River)

Abstract : River protection against erosion and degradation caused by water flow is considered one of the common approaches in river engineering. This study investigates the performance of groynes constructed with a three-year lifespan in the Ghal’eh Raeesi River, located in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, using MIKE 21 software. The actual erosion and sedimentation data collected three years after the groyne construction were compared with the simulation results obtained from MIKE 21 for the same period. The modules used in this study included the Hydrodynamic (HD) module for simulating flow dynamics and the Sediment Transport (ST) module for simulating non-cohesive sediment behavior. The results obtained from MIKE 21 indicated an average error of 23% in sedimentation or erosion compared to actual topographic surveys. Another important finding was that groynes installed in a converging pattern on the outer bends of the river and near the end of the bend performed more effectively. Additionally, it is recommended that the spacing between groynes be set at 2.5 times their length.
