Background and Objective: Generalized anxiety disorder is a type of anxiety disorder whose main feature is severe worry and anxiety (fearful anticipation) about a number of incidents or events. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of psychotherapy based on metadiagnosis and self-compassion on anxiety sensitivity in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.
Materials and Methods: The research method was semi-experimental and was conducted in the form of a pre-test-post-test design including two intervention groups and a control group. The target population in this study was all patients with generalized anxiety disorder referred to counseling centers in Mashhad in 1402. From this population, 45 patients were selected using a convenience sampling method and divided into three groups of 15 people and randomly assigned to two intervention groups and a control group, which was reduced to 13 people during the intervention. The Anxiety Sensitivity Scale (Reis et al., 1986) was used to collect data, and 10 sessions of metadiagnostic therapy and 12 sessions of self-compassion therapy were performed for the intervention groups. No intervention was performed for the control group. The analysis of covariance test was used to analyze the data using SPSS-25 software.
Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference in anxiety sensitivity and any of the dimensions of anxiety sensitivity (physical worries, psychological worries, and social worries) between the two integrated psychotherapy groups based on metadiagnostics and the compassion-based psychotherapy group at the post-test stage, and both treatments led to an improvement in anxiety sensitivity (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Given the nature of integrative psychotherapy based on metadiagnosis and psychotherapy based on self-compassion, these two treatment methods are recommended for the dimensions of anxiety sensitivity (physical concerns, psychological concerns, and social concerns).
