Abstract :
Pecan (Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch) is an economically important nut crop valued for its nutritional content and adaptability to diverse climates. This study evaluated the vegetative growth of seven commercial pecan cultivars (‘GraTex’, ‘Comanche 5M’, ‘Wichita’, ‘10 J’, ‘Choctaw’, ‘Comanche 4M’, and ‘GraKing’) across six regions in Iran. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with three replications, and measurements included tree height, trunk circumference, and spring budbreak over a five-year period (2019–2023). Results showed that in Sarpol Zahab, ‘GraTex’, ‘10 J’, and ‘GraKing’ exhibited the most vigorous growth, whereas ‘Comanche 5M’ and ‘Choctaw’ performed best in Kazerun. In Gorgan, ‘Comanche 4M’ demonstrated the greatest growth, while ‘Wichita’ showed the weakest performance. Combined analysis across locations indicated that Lahijan supported the highest overall vegetative growth, with ‘Comanche 5M’ and ‘GraTex’ identified as the most vigorous cultivars. Regarding budbreak, ‘Comanche 5M’ and ‘GraKing’ initiated growth earliest, whereas ‘GraTex’ consistently exhibited delayed budbreak, indicating potential resilience to spring frost damage. The observed variation in vegetative growth and budbreak can guide the selection of cultivars best suited for different Iranian agroclimatic zones.
