Efficiency of HEC-RAS and GIS model in flood zoning of Dez river (Study area: the range of the regulatory dam to the villages of Zavieh Dezful)

Abstract :
The purpose of this article is to use the geographic information system to identify the flood-prone and dangerous areas of the Dez River located in Dezful city from the border of the regulatory dam to the villages of Zavieh and the main goal is to identify the settlements and exposed areas. There is a risk of flooding in this way, the boundaries of the Dez River bed and flood zoning in the 25-year return period were determined using HEC-RAS, ARCGIS and HEC-GeoRAS software. The results showed that for a return period of 25 years, 1430 square kilometers of land will be covered by flood, which is outside the river boundary, and including the area of the river boundary, 4318 square kilometers are exposed to flood. Because in some places, residential, agricultural, recreational and parks are located in the boundaries of the river. Due to the existence of residential areas and resort uses on the banks of the river, it is necessary to carry out flood control operations and flood warning systems in the parts where more vulnerability is expected. And in order to remove the illegal occupations that have taken place in the bed and privacy of Dez River, the necessary action should be taken. Considering that the studied area is located in a dense urban area, by controlling and curbing the flood in the upstream watersheds by conducting watershed operations, engineering urban constructions and its non-development within the boundaries of waterways and identifying areas high risk and provide structural and non-structural solutions as much as possible to reduce the risk of flooding in this area
