  This study attempted to examine visual and verbal characteristics in Touchstone textbook series. For this purpose, four reading comprehension texts with similar topics were selected from the four Touchstone textbooks. Seven pictures accompanying the four texts were analyzed based on Kress and van Leeuwen’ssocial semiotics, and the four texts were analyzed with reference to Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. The results depicted fairly high functionality of the visuals in Touchstone series as well as their humanistic communicative trends. Moreover, it was found out that the pictures supported the linguistic text, there by helping learners to comprehend the textual content. The findings also showed that increase in text difficulty made for the occurrence of material and relational processes. Lastly, the results of verbal analysis suggested that reading comprehension texts of Touchstone series chiefly describe real world experiences and actions rather than behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Based on the outcomes, it can be concluded that the visuals are pertinent to the linguistic passages and help the learners to get a better understanding of the texts. پرونده مقاله

  برخی از زنان نویسنده معاصر ایرانی در مرحله‌ای از نویسندگی خود، به ماهیت و چیستی هویت زنان می‌پردازند. راوی رمان احتمالا گم‌شده‌ام نیز در پی خودآگاهی و کشف هویت فردی است و در این مسیر دچار بحران هویت شده و سعی در فائق آمدن بر این بحران دارد. نشانه‌شناسی یکی از روش‌های پژوهشی میان‌رشته‌ای است که به تحلیل نشانه‌ها می‌پردازد و در خوانش متون ادبی برای درک معانی نهفته در آنها کارگشاست. در این مقاله کوشش شده است با بهره‌گیری از رویکرد نشانه‌های اجتماعی، رمزگان‌های اجتماعی در رمان احتمالا گم‌شده‌ام اثر سارا سالار بررسی و تحلیل شود. بررسی رمان احتمالا گم‌شده‌ام از دیدگاه نشانه‌شناسی اجتماعی بیانگر آن است که نویسنده در بازنمایی و القای مفهوم مورد نظر خود یعنی بحران هویت موفق بوده است. سارا سالار حضور نشانه‌های اجتماعی را در رمزگان‌های هویتی مانند مکان، پوشاک، خوراک و نام به تصویر کشیده؛ بویژه از طریق تداعی مکان‌های گذشته و نیز بی‌نام بودن شخصیت اصلی، بر این مفهوم تاکید می‌کند. نشانه‌های آداب اجتماعی نیز در این رمان فراوان‌اند. نویسنده از روش‎‌های گوناگونِ ارتباط غیرکلامی (مانند لحن و اطوار) به عنوان بستری برای بازتاب مفهوم گم‌گشتگی هویت بهره برده است؛ به این صورت که لحن گفتاری توهین‌آمیز و غیر همدلانه در گفت‌وگوهای ذهنی راوی نیز در خدمت القای مفهوم بحران هویت است. پرونده مقاله

  English coursebooks used in vocational secondary schools should accommodate the engineering students&rsquo; needs for their future profession. It is essential to reveal company trainers&rsquo; and engineers&rsquo; perception of the English coursebook used at school to know whether the English coursebook meets students&rsquo; needs for their future profession or not. Therefore, in this study, we investigated company trainers&rsquo; and engineers&rsquo; perception of the English coursebook that is used at vocational secondary schools based on the social semiotic perspective. We distributed open-ended questionnaires and conducted in-depth interviews to both engineers and engineering company trainers as professionals about the topics and registers provided in the English coursebook. The results of data analysis revealed that the topics and registers in the coursebook are not relevant with what students need for their future profession as engineers. In fact, both engineers and company trainers believed that the English coursebook should provide topics and registers related to the engineering field. Thus, we hope that the findings of this article would positively contribute to the development of English materials and coursebooks for vocational secondary school level. پرونده مقاله
