Undoubtedly, water transfer by tunneling method, like other development projects, has many environmental effects and consequences that need to be evaluated for environmental impacts in various stages of project implementation, including construction and operation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the environmental impact (EIA) of Koohrang 3 tunnel during the construction phase. In this study, using the ICOLD matrix method (International Commission on Large Dams), environmental effects including the physical, biological, socio-economic and cultural environments of Koohrang 3 tunnel were studied. The ICOLD matrix method has the ability to evaluate the qualitative environmental effects of the designs and show them as quantitative data within the matrix. Koohrang 3 tunnel with a length of 24.1 km was constructed in Koohrang city of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, in order to transfer water at a rate of about 255 million cubic meters per year, to meet part of the water demands of the Central Plateau of Iran. In this study, for the first time, the physical, biological, economic, socio-cultural and cultural environmental effects of Koohrang 3 tunnel were studied using the ICOLD matrix method. The findings of this study showed that Koohrang 3 tunnel has a total of 705 positive and negative effects, including 244 positive effects and 461 negative effects. The share of positive effects is about 34.5% and the share of negative effects is 65.5%. The results indicated that the Koohrang 3 tunnel, with -627 points, has had major negative effects on the environment of the region.
