Medicinal plants are known as rich sources for treatment and their use has a history as old as human history. Medicinal plants with fewer side effects and high efficiency are considered as effective options for treating diseases. Research shows that there are more than 2,300 species of plants with medicinal, spice, cosmetic, health and aromatic properties, of which 300 to 400 types are prescribed in traditional medicine. Among them, colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis) has been considered in numerous studies due to its antioxidant and therapeutic properties. This article comprehensively reviews the structure, chemical composition and therapeutic effects of colocynth. The aim of this article is to provide an up-to-date overview of the importance and therapeutic values of colocynth in traditional and modern medicine. Colocynth has shown antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties by containing active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids and fatty acids. This plant has been extensively studied in the treatment of metabolic diseases, infections, and even some types of cancer, with promising results. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of action and safety of its use in clinical applications. Finally, this article emphasizes the importance of conservation and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants such as Citrullus colocynthis, highlighting their role in the development of natural medicines and reducing dependence on harmful chemical drugs.
