Research Purpose: Social media has provided a context for cyber acculturation through media exposure to the procedures, values, and cultural identities of other cultures. This research explored the factors affecting cyber acculturation of social media (Instagram) users in exposure to cyber subcultures.
Methodology: In this study, a basic qualitative research approach was adopted. Data were collected through interviews with 50 participants (18 media-cultural experts and 32 Instagram users), through an online questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using Brown and Clark's thematic analysis approach, employing an inductive analysis method.
Results: Three categories of individual, media, and macro-sociocultural factors affecting social media users' cyber acculturation, along with their associated themes and subthemes were extracted.
Conclusion: The present research has contributed to fill the existing literature gap by opening up the new study area of cyber acculturation in exposure to cyber subcultures, as well as presenting factors affecting it. These factors can contribute to effective policy-making, legislation and macro measures for cultural changes resulting from social media production and consumption.
