Attachment styles, primary maladaptive psychology and defense mechanisms are the main determinants of psychological problems. Discovering the relationships between these variables is of theoretical and clinical importance. The aim of the present research was to predict defense mechanisms based on primary conflict schemas and attachment styles in students. The research community included all undergraduate students of the Islamic Azad University of Karaj in the academic year 1402-1401, among them a sample of 221 people were selected randomly. Research tools included Andrews et al.'s (1993) defensive style questionnaires, Young's (1998) primary conflict schemas, and Collins and Reed's (1990) attachment style. The research hypotheses were investigated using the multiple regression analysis test in a simultaneous method. Examining the results showed that predictor variables can predict 32% of the variance of undeveloped defense mechanisms, 31% of the developed defense mechanism and 31% of the psychologically offended defense mechanism of students and the inconsistent schema of emotional deprivation (p<0.01). With a negative coefficient and secure attachment style (p<0.01) with a positive coefficient entered the regression equation of the developed defense mechanism, and the primary maladaptive schemas of mistrust and misbehavior (p<0.05) and punishment (p<0.01) Also, the ambivalent attachment style (p<0.01) was entered into the regression equation of the psychotic defense mechanism with positive coefficients. Therefore, the absence of an incompatible schema of emotional deprivation and the use of a secure attachment style can predict the use of defense mechanisms developed in adulthood.
