1 - Studying “Garmabeh- the bathroom” as the threshold level move in the fiction called “the son of the merchant and the city of the voiceless people” in the book entitled “Hasht Behesht- 8 paradises” written by Amir Khosro

The narrators of common myths need unknown and strange atmosphere to color their narrations with secrets. This atmosphere can isolate the hero from the real world and joins him to a magical and mythical world which is known as the threshold passage. Undoubtedly one of the best places to include the heroes in unknown issues and topics is the bathroom (Garmabeh). The understanding and analysis of such a secret atmosphere is the basic precondition to reveal the myths and to achieve their hidden messages. One of the very useful tools to reveal such issues in myths is the theory of “a single hero journey” posed by Joseph Campbell. The major goal of the present study is to emphasize on the importance of “Garmabeh” as the threshold passage time. In this research, “Garmabeh” in the story called “the son of the merchant and the city of voiceless people” written by Amir Khosro Dehlavi has been analyzed as the threshold passage. The results showed that Amir Khosro has acted very cleverly and successfully in using the secret atmosphere of Garmabeh as the threshold passage and also the comparison of it with pass rituals and triple sections of the traditional bathrooms. Diaries are the most important documents about Iranian history that their translation and analysis can help us to understand more about our history. Also we know that remain only a few remains of historic baths; because this type of architecture is very weak against damages and demolitions. For this reason, all diaries' writings about baths can find special importance. This paper reviews some of the most famous and important diaries with the analytic and comparative methods to find more about baths' architecture and leave the anthropological aspects. The results show that all reviewed diaries pointed 281 times to different aspects of baths' architecture. Naser-al Din Shah's diary with 34 times, Jakob Eduard Polak's diary with 26 and Gaspard Drouville's diary with 24 times have some important information about baths' architecture. Manuscript profile

The energy crisis and the necessity of managing its consumption has turned the revision of the ways of shaping the structure of the space and the body of today's buildings into the main principle of architectural planning. Historical baths are a set of the most obvious practical optimization solutions in Iranian architecture. Therefore, this research aims to solve the problem of matching the performance of thermal system and the spatial physical structure of the historical baths of Iran and explores the relationships between the spaces as well as the geometric and spatial measures for thermal and functional isolation. The main question of the research is that what are the differences in the physical proportions and spatial structure of historical baths in the cold and dry climates of Qazvin and the temperate and humid climates of Gilan in terms of adaptation to the thermal system? The research method is descriptive, analytical and logical reasoning. The method of data collection is library and field, and the data analysis tool is the specialized software of space syntax. The samples include 8 baths in the two climatic regions of Qazvin and Gilan with different physical dimensions and patterns despite the geographical proximity of the two mentioned regions. The results of the research determine the differences and similarities regarding the area ratio of Garmkhane to Sarbineh, the entrance structure, the communication nodes and the degree of connectivity, integration and spatial depth of the samples in relation to energy conservation and management of the thermal system. The energy crisis and the necessity of managing its consumption has turned the revision of the ways of shaping the structure of the space and the body of today's buildings into the main principle of architectural planning. Historical baths, public benefit buildings and worthy of attention with high spatial and geometric diversity, are a set of the most obvious practical optimization solutions in Iranian architecture, which contain extractable and valuable lessons from the configuration, hierarchy and control of spatial communication in relation to energy. Therefore, this research aims to solve the problem of matching the performance of the thermal system and the spatial physical structure of the historical baths of Iran and explores the relationships between the spaces as well as the geometric and spatial measures for thermal and functional isolation. The main question of the research is that what are the differences in the physical proportions and spatial structure of historical baths in the cold and dry climates of Qazvin and the temperate and humid climates of Gilan in terms of adaptation to the thermal system? The results of the research determine the differences and similarities regarding the area ratio of Garmkhane to Sarbineh, the entrance structure, the communication nodes and the degree of connectivity, integration and spatial depth of the samples in relation to energy conservation and management of the thermal system. Also, the results show that the difference in the physical spatial structure of Gilan baths is more obvious and in general, the reduction of the effect of climatic force has led to an increase in the diversity of the spatial structure in this group. While the similarity of the physical structure of Qazvin baths is due to the necessity of adapting to the thermal system and responding to more difficult climatic conditions. Manuscript profile

The Turkish baths are quite identical to Iranian baths regarding their architectural stractures and institutions. Hamāmm is often present in the works of Mowlānā Jalāl-al Din Rumī. According to the scripts and old tales, he spent most of his time meditating in baths. In his poetry, espicelly Masnavī Manavī, Mowlānā refers to dallāk (the person who helped wash clients by soaping and scrubbing their bodies), apodyterium (changing room), tepidarium (heated room), caldarium (hot bathing room) and etc. The present article entertains this very subject.     Manuscript profile

In some versified Persian literary texts certain characteristics of public bath (hammām) like the building and its parts, temperature and rituals of taking a bath are described, although the numbers of these texts are not very many. Some of the texts reflect the mystical teachings and its rituals. In these texts, the poet, at first, compares hammam with Sufi monastery (Khanqāh) and then connects the rituals of taking a bath to rituals of mystic journey (Suluk). The present article, first tries to show the intellectual details and beauties of the poems, and then, explain the reasons for the reflection of some mystical elements in description of these bath buildings (hammāmz).
