Presenting a grounded theory management model in sports (case study: high performance sports)

Abstract :

management in sports (case study: high performance sports). High-performance sports systems are created to guide planning for the development of talented young athletes, elite-level athletes and coaches, and organizations based on the belief that athlete success can be influenced by human intervention. High-performance sports management is the management of elite athletes. An elite athlete is defined as an individual who represents their country in major national and international sporting competitions, Olympic and non-Olympic sports, professional sports and teams (such as football and basketball). The research method was of a qualitative type, which was conducted using a grounded-theory method. The participants included knowledgeable and expert faculty members in the field of research topic, as well as current and former heads of high-performance sports in the country, high level coaches and athletes at the national level. The participants were selected purposefully. A total of 16 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted between 35 and 55 minutes. Theoretical saturation was achieved in interview 14. In this research, three stages of open, axial and selective coding were used. The coding strategy was based online-by-line coding and 57 open codes, and 21 central codes were counted. To examine the validity, the research findings were presented to the participants, they read the text of the theory, and their comments were applied. To increase the internal validity of the study, the respondents' feedback was used and after coding, the respondents were asked to review the codes and provide their comments. Three experts also reviewed the codes and provided their comments to confirm them. Intra-subject agreement method was used as a reliability index, and the value of 75% was obtained and it is acceptable. Requirements included competence, intelligence and governance. Obstacles included economic, managerial, social and human barriers. Context included hardware, organizational, administrative, technology, fans, media and events. Strategies included balancing and integrating the resources of grassroots and high-performance sports, event management, organizational leadership, and talent management. Results included three sports, social and political-symbolic dimensions. Management skills and proper governance are essential and combining the resources of public sports and high-performance sports are among the management strategies of high-performance sports. It is suggested that public and high-performance sports resources be combined, that competent and high-level events be held, that high-performance sports organizations focus on resource development, effectiveness, and promotion of competitive advantage, and that elite recruitment and development be placed on their agenda, and that competent managers be used in this field.
