The place of geometric thinking in improving the capabilities of architecture students in basic undergraduate courses (Case example: Introduction to architectural design course 2)

Abstract :
Architecture education, as one of the influential branches in the face of the city and creativity, needs innovative development. Teaching the basics of design in the field of architecture is one of the most important parts of education for architecture students. The purpose of this research is to investigate the principles of the optimal teaching of design in the field of architecture in basic courses to students in order to improve the quality of all education. In order to carry out this research in the introductory course of architecture 2, in Urmia University, in the semester of 2018-2019, two groups of 25 people were selected as the experimental group and the control group. In both groups, the subject of design, restrictions and conditions and the site were the same. In the test group, lessons were taught in the traditional way, and in the experimental group, the design method based on geometric thinking was taught. In the qualitative part, data collection was done with the in-depth interview tool. In the quantitative part, the scores of both groups were analyzed by 4 expert professors of the university. The results showed that the geometric principles used in traditional architecture, if used in contemporary architectural buildings in a principled way and with proportions and in accordance with the context, increase the work of the building. It also improves the comfort and relaxation of the users, the sense of belonging and vitality of the building, balance and identity to some extent.
