Key Indicators of Green Housing: A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

Abstract :
Today, the climate change crisis is one of humanity’s most significant and serious challenges, with widespread impacts on the environment, economy, human health, and daily life. The construction industry, as one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, plays a highly critical and decisive role in exacerbating this crisis. In this context, adopting a sustainable and comprehensive approach to the design, planning, and construction of housing is essential and vital. Green housing, as an innovative and practical solution to address this challenge, aims to design and construct buildings that coexist more harmoniously and sustainably with the environment, reduce energy consumption and natural resource use, and enhance residents’ well-being. Achieving the objectives of green housing requires a clear understanding of the key indicators and components in building design and construction, without which evaluating and implementing sustainable projects is not possible. This study, using a qualitative research method and a systematic review of 25 reputable articles, analyzes and ranks the importance and priority of the key components of green buildings. The results show that the architecture and construction indicator is the most frequently mentioned in the articles, followed by the indicators of micro-environment quality, sustainable management, greenness, and macro-environment and location, based on weighted analysis. Among the architecture and construction components, materials and resources have the highest share (26%) with 13 components in total. Next, green infrastructure holds an 18% share, followed by external green infrastructure and renewable materials, which are considered the most important components within architecture and construction according to frequency and priority in the articles.
