Comparison of the effectiveness of transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (cbt) on reducing anxiety and depression in psychiatric clinics

Abstract The aim of this The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (cbt) on reducing anxiety and depression in patients referred to psychiatric clinics in Tehran. The present study is a pre-test and post-test with a control group in terms of practical purpose and method of collecting information. Research sample: 60 patients with depression and anxiety who were diagnosed by the Psychiatric Commission and were admitted to psychology clinics in 2015. Which were selected by random sampling available and also randomly divided into three groups (two experimental groups and a control group) in each group of 20 people. Clinical symptoms of anxiety and depression of participants in this study by Beck Depression and Anxiety Questionnaires in the pretest and the test was weighed. From the experimental groups, one group underwent cognitive-behavioral therapy for 12 sessions and the other group underwent transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy for 20 sessions and the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance. The results showed that there is a significant difference between transcranial magnetic stimulation treatments and cognitive-behavioral therapy to reduce anxiety and depression in patients at the confidence level (P <0.01). Therefore, considering the difference between the means can be showed that transcranial magnetic stimulation therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapy are effective in reducing anxiety and depression in patients referred to psychology clinics.
