The impact of Iran's security competition with Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Bab-el-Mandeb region on the Persian Gulf security subcomplex

Abstract :

 

 

The Persian Gulf region, due to its vast energy resources and geopolitical position, is considered one of the world's important and strategic areas. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait is also a vital commercial hub located between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa. This position has led to the presence of multiple actors in the region and the formation of complex security competitions that have affected the security sub-system of the Persian Gulf and the rivalries among Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This research, using an explanatory method, addresses the question: What impact has the security competition among Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in Bab-el-Mandeb had on their rivalries in the Persian Gulf? To examine these competitions, the theoretical framework of Buzan's security complex theory has been used. Political differences, armament, and ideological competitions in Bab-el-Mandeb are considered obstacles to sustainable security in the region. The United States, as an extra-regional actor, has also hindered the development of cooperation and increased hostilities. The main hypothesis is that the competition between Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in Bab-el-Mandeb has led to the formation of a security continuum between this region and the Persian Gulf and has influenced patterns of friendship and enmity.  Therefore, actors aim to control this strategic area, and through a participatory security model and multidimensional cooperation, sustainable security in the Persian Gulf can be achieved under the supervision of regional actors without foreign intervention.
