Re-identification of the Historical Identity and Communication Routes of the Ancient Settlement of Darram in Upper Tarom: Based on Archaeological Evidence and Historical Texts

Abstract :

Darram is the name of a district in Upper Tarom County, with its center in a historic village of the same name. This toponym is mentioned in several medieval Islamic texts and later sources. The present study investigates the historical background of Darram and explores the nature of its ancient settlement, known as Qal‘eh Darram, through archaeological evidence and historical texts. To achieve this aim, cultural materials from the site, including pottery and architectural features of the remaining structures, were examined and analyzed. In addition, by consulting historical accounts, particularly the travelogue of Pietro Della Valle, a seventeenth-century Italian traveler, the old route that passed through Darram during the Safavid period and earlier was identified and reconstructed on a map. The findings indicate that Qal‘eh Darram functioned as a central and significant settlement in Upper Tarom during the pre-Islamic era, especially in the Parthian period, as well as throughout the medieval and later Islamic centuries, and was one of the most extensive sites in the Abbar and Darram districts. Moreover, the study reveals that the ancient communication route, passing through the present-day village of Darram and the valley of the Qizil-Uzan River, largely coincided with the modern road due to the mountainous topography of the region.
