General proposal for determining the boundaries and boundaries of the registered historical structure of Meybod

Abstract :
Meybod is one of the few cities that has largely preserved the authenticity of its historic fabric. Its most notable features include a well-ordered urban framework, spatial continuity despite fragmented textures, and the interconnection of key elements such as the bazaar, caravanserai, Friday Mosque, and governmental citadel. Defining the city’s core zone (arseh) and buffer zone (harim) to mitigate the adverse effects of human and natural factors is a crucial tool for managing and safeguarding this historic fabric and for re-examining how integrated management can be achieved. Drawing on a qualitative research approach that combines library research and field studies, this paper proposes guidelines for delineating the core and buffer zones as instruments for the effective management of Meybod’s historic quarters. The primary purpose of establishing these boundaries is to protect the area’s outstanding heritage values. Although the concept of a buffer zone is now widely applied in Iran, its benefits for the local community have seldom been addressed. This oversight can lead to local dissatisfaction and, consequently, prevent the intended goals of buffer-zone designation from being met. Given the expansion of Meybod’s historic area and the serious threat of widespread destruction, three distinct proposals for defining the city’s core and buffer zones are presented to facilitate decision-making on the preservation of this heritage fabric.
