Abstract :
In the past four decades, there have been more visible developments in the global trend of marriage, indicating an increase in the tendency towards permanent celibacy. This phenomenon and its consequences threaten social structures in Iran in several ways. The present article aims to examine some social factors related to the tendency towards permanent celibacy of girls, analyzing and reviewing this issue in the city of Tabriz.
This research was conducted as a survey. The statistical population was unmarried girls aged 18-49 living in Tabriz. The research tool was the questionnaire made by the researcher, and questions were designed based on the theoretical framework of the research. The independent variables were: distrust of the opposite sex, having financial independence, the expected income of the spouse, education, and type of job of women. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software.
The findings show, there is a direct, positive, and significant effect between the dependent and independent variables. Mistrust of the opposite sex with a correlation coefficient of 0.529, financial independence with a correlation coefficient of 0.309, and the expected income of the spouse with a correlation coefficient of 0.143 are related to the dependent variable. Also, according to the results, the average of the dependent variable according to the respondent's education, has a significant difference but there is no significant difference in the average tendency to be single according to the respondent's occupation.
Although it is often stated that education and having a job are the most important factors influencing the tendency towards permanent celibacy, the findings of the present study show that distrust of the opposite sex and the desire to have financial independence, as well as women's expectations of their husbands' income, are the most important factors associated with the tendency towards celibacy in the studied society.
