Abstract :
Background: Familial history of obesity (FHO) increases the risk of offspring being obese. Moreover, the type of dietary pattern might also be involved in the development of obesity. The aim of this study is to determine major dietary patterns and their association with anthropometric indexes [Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)] in adult women with and without Familial history of obesity living in the north of Tehran, Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study 460 women aged 20-50 living in the north of Tehran were sampled by stratified random sampling method. Dietary intake was collected by a semi-quantitative F.F.Q. and anthropometric indexes were measured by standard methods. Familial history of obesity was defined as having at least one obese first-degree relative. Major dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis method. Finally, the association between major dietary patterns and anthropometric indexes was assessed separately in two groups with and without familial history of obesity by multiple linear regression analysis. Result: Two healthy and unhealthy major dietary patterns were identified. After adjusting for confounders, in both groups with and without familial history of obesity, BMI and WC had negative associations with healthy dietary pattern and positive association with unhealthy dietary pattern (P<0.05( .Conclusion: Findings indicated that the relation between major dietary patterns and anthropometric indexes was not influenced by familial history of obesity.
