The Effectiveness of Parents Compassion - Based Parenting Training on the Emotion Cognitive Regulation and Self-Efficacy of Students with Social Anxiety

Abstract :

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of parents compassion- based parenting training on emotion cognitive regulation and self - efficacy of students with social anxiety. The research design was semi-experimental with pre-test-post-test and control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all female students with social anxiety and their mothers in Shahid Montazeri Elementary School in Ghahjavaristan village in 2018. 30 mothers were selected based on the criteria for entering the study and purposive sampling method and randomly allocated in two groups of 15 subjects each. The experimental group participated in eight 90-minutes compassion based parenting training sessions, but the control group received none. Finally, the students answered Garnefsky Children’s Emotion Cognitive Regulation Questionnaire (2007) and Wheeler & Ladd Children’s Self-Efficacy Questionnaires (1982) in two stages. The data were analyzed by analysis of covariance and   multi variants analysis of covariance. The results showed that there were significant differences between the scores of control and experimental groups in negative and positive strategies of emotion cognitive regulation and self - efficacy in students with social anxiety and the intervention increased the use of positive emotion regulation strategies and increased self - efficacy and decreased the use of negative emotion regulation strategies in students. Based on the obtained results, it could be concluded that compassion based parenting training was effective in applying emotion cognitive regulation strategies and increasing self - efficacy of children and adolescents with social anxiety.
