The Effectiveness of Group Marital Skills Education Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on Woman’s Mental Well-Being, Irrational Communication Beliefs and Intimacy

Abstract :
The goal of this study was evaluating the effectiveness of group marital skills education based on acceptance and commitment therapy on woman’s mental well-being, irrational communication beliefs and intimacy in city of Rasht. The statistical population included all married women of Rasht city and study’s sample subsumed 30 women who met the inclusion criteria that were selected by judgmental sampling method. The participants were randomly divided into control and experimental groups (15 women per group). The design of this study was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest and control group. For data gathering the Subjective Well-being Questionnaire (2003), the Communication Beliefs (1988) and the Intimacy Scales (1983), respectively were complemented. The experimental group received marital skills with ACT approach education in ten sessions. Their psychological well-being, communication beliefs and intimacy were evaluated before and after the intervention using the gathered data were analyzes through multivariate analysis of covariance. Data analysis showed that, at post‐intervention, participants revealed significantly higher mental well-being and intimacy and lower irrational communication beliefs. The results revealed that, the acceptance and commitment therapy based group marital skills education affected the mental well-being, communication believes and intimacy among woman (p<0.05). ACT-B-MSE is an effective and acceptable treatment for improving woman’s’ psychological well-being, communication beliefs and intimacy.
