Survey on prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in cats of sari

Abstract :
This study was conducted over a period of 10 months during the years 1402-1403 (2023-2024). During this period, 245 fecal samples were collected from stray immature and mature cats in Sari and examined microscopically for parasitological analysis. For microscopic identification, Ziehl-Neelsen and Trichrome staining methods were used. Among 54 cats aged 1 to 2 years, 1 cat (1.9%) was infected with Cryptosporidium. Among 63 cats aged 2 to 3 years, 4 cats (6.3%) were infected, and among 110 cats older than 3 years, 6 cats (5.5%) were infected with Cryptosporidium. No Cryptosporidium infection was detected in fecal samples from 18 kittens aged 1 year or less. Among 54 cats aged 1 to 2 years, 4 cats (7.4%) were infected with Giardia. Among 63 cats aged 2 to 3 years, 4 cats (6.3%) were infected, and among 110 cats older than 3 years, 7 cats (6.4%) were infected with Giardia. No Giardia infection was detected in fecal samples from 18 kittens aged 1 year or less. Among 133 male cats, 7 cats (5.3%) were infected with Cryptosporidium, and among 112 female cats, 4 cats (3.6%) were infected. Among 133 male cats, 10 cats (7.5%) were infected with Giardia, and among 112 female cats, 5 cats (4.5%) were infected. The results of the Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests showed no significant relationship between age, gender, and the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in the cats studied in Sari.
