Abstract :
The research aims to analyze the architectural components affecting the quality of space in human-centered urban squares, and focuses on a case study of the historical square of Naghsh-e Jahan in Isfahan. As one of the most prominent examples of urban design in Iranian-Islamic architecture, this square has a coherent, organized, and meaningful structure that presents a unique model of spatial quality in terms of form, scale, spatial proportions, and multiple functions. The research evaluates physical-architectural components, including spatial proportions, legibility of paths, continuous walling, quality of materials, lighting, spatial structure, and the presence of natural elements from the perspective of urban users’ experience. The research method is descriptive-analytical and data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 300 citizens of the square. The findings show that from the users' perspective, the harmonious coexistence of forms, spatial coherence, appropriate accessibility, human scale, and the presence of green space are among the most important components that have led to the improvement of the spatial quality of the square. At the same time, some contemporary environmental challenges such as increasing tourism pressure, noise and visual pollution caused by inappropriate activities, and the lack of supporting spaces for modern recreation can affect the spatial experience. The research emphasizes that reinterpreting the architectural patterns of historical landmarks such as the role of the world and strengthening their human-centered function in the context of contemporary urban life will play a key role in improving the quality of urban spaces.
