Abstract :

In contemporary architecture, the sensory experience of space is considered one of the key dimensions in interior design. Materials, as one of the most effective factors shaping space, play a role beyond structure and function and can be a medium for conveying sense, meaning, and perception.  This study aims to investigate the role of materials in the formation of sensory experience in interior architecture, and analyzes three prominent examples of Peter Zumthor’s works, including the Termeh Vals Bathhouse, the Brother Claus Church, and the Columba Museum. The main question of the research is how materials in these works are transformed from a construction element into a tool for creating meaning and spatial perception. The research method was qualitative and descriptive-analytical, and the information was collected through library studies and analysis of comparative tables. The results of the research show that Zumthor, by consciously choosing materials and paying attention to their sensory characteristics such as texture, color, temperature, light, and sound, created spaces that invite the user to a perceptual, emotional, and mental experience. In all three works, materials are not only the builders of the body, but also the language of expression of meaning, memory, and the atmosphere of the space.  In conclusion, it can be said that materials in Zumthor's works act as a tool for activating the senses and creating a lived experience of architecture, transforming the user's presence in the space into a personal, intuitive and profound matter.
