Abstract :
This phenomenological study explores how meanings and symbols associated with housing are constructed in the minds of Ardabil residents. The research aims to demonstrate that housing, beyond being a physical shelter, serves as a platform for embodying identity and values, playing a central role in shaping transcendent experiences. Cultural, social, and historical factors, particularly individualism and consumerism, have significantly influenced these meanings and symbols.
Employing the qualitative Q-method and phenomenological analysis, the study reveals that the lived experience of place is a multi-sensory and dynamic experience in which mind and body are inextricably intertwined. Findings indicate that individuals attribute diverse meanings to housing based on personal experiences, cultural and social beliefs, and the influences of media and the surrounding environment. The concept of "self" and its relationship with "other" plays a pivotal role in shaping these meanings. Individuals seek to define their identity and connect with society through housing. The mentality of Ardabil residents towards housing is a complex interplay of social cognition, emotions, values, and behavioral tendencies that mutually influence each other and, in conjunction with identity, needs, and (genetic and generational) experience, impact the meanings and symbols associated with housing.
The results demonstrate that lived experience of place is a dynamic and multi-layered process influenced by individual, social, cultural, and environmental factors, leading to the presentification of meaning in relation to place through intentionality and awareness.
