Abstract :
Misophonia is a disorder in which individuals experience negative emotions such as anger, disgust, and anxiety in response to certain sounds such as mouth and nasal sounds, as well as some repetitive sounds. This disorder is highly prevalent and creates many problems for patients. This study was conducted to determine the difference in the efficacy of two treatment methods, including short-term cognitive behavioral group therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy on emotional control and behavioral avoidance in students with misophonia. This research was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test design with random assignment of the three groups. Statistical population consisted of Ayatollah Amoli University's 2021 students and 48 participants were selected by cluster sampling and randomly assigned to the G-CBT (16 participants), G-MBSR (16 participants), and control (16 participants) groups. First, the students were asked to respond to the online self-report questionnaires of Misophonia Questionnaire by Wu et al (2014). Among them, individuals who met the criteria also answered the self-report questionnaires of Roger and Najarian's (1989) emotional control and Acceptance and Action Bond and et al (2007). The results showed that both treatment methods significantly increased emotional control and decreased behavioral avoidance and emotions caused by misophonia in the post-test stage, and in comparison between two treatment groups, short-term cognitive behavioral group therapy had a significantly higher efficacy in reducing behavioral avoidance and emotions caused by misophonia, but both treatments had similar efficacy in emotional control. According to the findings, both treatments can be used to reduce and control misophonia symptoms in students.
