Abstract :

Allegory, by linking abstract concepts to tangible imagery, enables readers to grasp the deeper meanings of poetry. This literary device not only enhances aesthetic richness but also fosters emotional empathy with the poet. In contemporary Iranian poetry, allegory plays a pivotal role in simplifying complex ideas and encouraging philosophical reflection. This research adopts a descriptive-analytical method, using library-based data collection, to conduct a comparative study of allegory’s functions in the works of five prominent contemporary poets (Ali Baba-Chahi, Yadollah Royaee, Seyed Ali Salehi, Ahmadreza Ahmadi, and Grous Abdolmalekian), tracing its evolution across different generational shifts in poetry.

The central question of the study examines the structural, thematic, and functional similarities and differences of allegory in these poets’ works. The hypothesis posits that allegories in their poetry primarily reflect socio-individual crises, philosophical inquiries, and critiques of power structures, with each poet employing unique stylistic approaches to create innovative semantic layers.

Findings reveal that allegory, as a dynamic rhetorical tool, has significantly enriched the language and thematic depth of contemporary Persian poetry. The studied poets have utilized multi-layered allegories to articulate universal concepts through localized expressions, transforming Persian poetry into a dialogic platform. This approach has not only expanded the aesthetic dimensions of poetry but also facilitated societal critique and abstract thinking. The poets’ innovative use of allegory marks a step toward the internationalization of contemporary Iranian literature.
