Spivak's "Subordinate" Manifestations in the Female Characters of Two Novels: The Jaikhali Seluch  and The Ars Al-Zin

Abstract :

 Postcolonial criticism is an interdisciplinary research field, one of the most important theoretical branches  which is the study of the underclass. Spivak is one of the pioneers of the postcolonial underclass approach. He considers literary texts as a suitable alternative for expressing the history of the underclass. Dolatabadi and Saleh, two contemporary Iranian and Sudanese novelists, in their novels “The Empty Place of Saluch” and “The Wedding of the Underclass”, represent the problems of the underclass, including women. In this research, using an analytical-descriptive method, relying on Spivak's literary models, it is determined that in the two postcolonial works, The Empty Space of Saluch and The Wedding of the Beautiful, the problems of the difficult life of rural society, especially the hidden and institutionalized violence of men against certain subordinates (women, girls), are addressed, and the common aspects of the identity and agency of autonomous female heroines who, with self-awareness and creative and wise discourses, try to moderate internal contradictory forces and, as a result, relationships with opportunistic men, are depicted. In parallel with this representation of the heterogeneity of Dolatabadi's skeptical and illusory view with Tayyeb Saleh's optimistic view of the future of rural society in Iran and Sudan, the cultural and class differences of the oppressed, especially women, are attributed to the course of exclusive social, political, biological, and economic events, and the results thereof are reflected in the symbolic allegories at the end of both narratives.
