Investigation of Asphaltene Solubility in Various Solvents and the Effect of Hysteresis Phenomenon on It

Abstract :
Asphaltene precipitation in oil reservoirs is one of the major challenges in the oil industry, causing reduced production efficiency, formation damage, and increased maintenance costs. In this study, the solubility of asphaltene deposits in various solvents was investigated, and the optimal solvent was identified based on the crude oil type and asphaltene composition. Experiments were conducted using a reflux system. The results show that aromatic solvents such as toluene and xylene are more effective in dissolving the deposits compared to white spirit. Furthermore, the hysteresis phenomenon was observed between the stages of asphaltene precipitation and redissolution, indicating the complex behavior of these compounds in crude oil. These findings can contribute to improving asphaltene deposit management methods and reducing the associated costs.
